What Is a Power of Attorney in the UAE?
A Power of Attorney is a legal document by which one person (the Principal) authorises another person (the Agent or Attorney-in-Fact) to act on their behalf in specific or general matters. In the UAE, POAs must typically be notarised by a UAE Notary Public and, for use abroad, may require additional authentication through the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the relevant country's embassy.
Types of Power of Attorney in Dubai
We draft and notarise all types of Power of Attorney for individuals and businesses.
General Power of Attorney
Grants broad authority to the agent to act on behalf of the principal in all legal, financial, and administrative matters. Used when the principal is residing abroad or is unable to handle their UAE affairs personally.
Special Power of Attorney
Grants authority for a specific transaction or limited set of actions β for example, to sell a specific property, represent the principal in a specific court case, or open a specific bank account.
Property POA
Specifically authorises the agent to deal with one or more properties on the principal's behalf β buying, selling, renting, managing, or transferring real estate registered with the Dubai Land Department.
Court POA
Authorises a lawyer to represent the principal in legal proceedings before UAE courts. This type of POA is required before any lawyer can formally appear on your behalf in Dubai Courts or the DIFC Courts.
Business POA
Authorises the agent to manage a business, sign contracts, hire or dismiss employees, deal with banks, and conduct all business-related matters on the principal's behalf.
Medical POA
Authorises the agent to make medical decisions on behalf of the principal in the event of incapacity. Useful for spouses, elderly relatives, and individuals with health concerns.
